Gynaecomastia surgery

The development of excess male breast tissue can be a frustrating condition.  Although the breast tissue is ‘normal’ tissue, and not associated with male breast cancer, it is often tender, and patients may be very aware of the cosmetic appearance.

Gynaecomastia surgery

There are generally two types of ‘man boob’ - one in which the tissue is mainly fatty, and generally associated with a higher overall body weight; and one where the tissue is mainly glandular breast tissue.

Fatty gynaecomastia can improve considerably with general weight reduction, which would be the first advice given.  Although liposuction is possible, this can give variable results.  Surgical excision of the excess tissue may be performed, often preserving the nipple; however, this requires a larger scar.

Glandular gynaecomastia usually arises due to excess oestrogen - from steroids, cannabis, alcohol intake and some medication.  Our first advice would be to try to identify the cause and reverse this - this will result in the best, and most natural result.  Should the measures fail, surgical excision of the glandular tissue can be performed, with careful balance of taking the correct amount of tissue to avoid a dip in the chest contour beneath the nipple.

Amy will after a careful examination, and possible imaging with ultrasound, discuss what type of tissue is causing the appearance, and give advice about non surgical and surgical options.

Surgery for gynaecomastia is performed as a day case, generally without use of drains.
